My book of study will be The Anatomy of the Brain and Nerves by Thomas Willis. If you have already read my bio, then yes, I know what you are thinking. I did say that this class would be an opportunity to expand my knowledge outside of the field with which I am most familiar. However, after signing up for this course, I learned that Marshall University has a medical library, called the Charles Hoffman Library, in their Special Collections department. Started by Dr. Charles "Carl" Hoffman (1904-1981), it is a collection that details the history of medical science (for more information, visit http://www.marshall.edu/special-collections/hoffman/default.asp). With this discovery, I thought that selecting a book from this library would allow me to better appreciate and understand the objectives of this course by tying the unfamiliar with the familiar.
Now I have explained why I chose a book from this library, but I have not yet said why I chose this particular book. Most of you who are unfamiliar with this book most likely assumed I chose it due to it being very old perhaps, but on the contrary, this book was published in 1978, which would be fairly recent, especially in comparison to the other books in this library. So why did I choose this book? This book, although fairly new, emulates the style and design of much older and authentic books, such as the Shakespeare Folio. Through my research of this book, I hope to uncover its production to determine whether it is truly a beautiful book.
